All About SFRC Manhole Covers

What are manhole covers?

SFRC Manhole covers, also known as access covers or chamber covers, are removable lids or plates that are used to cover openings in the ground, providing access to underground utility networks and manhole chambers. They are typically made of materials such as reinforced concrete, cast iron, and fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP) and are designed to withstand heavy loads, vehicular traffic, and various environmental conditions.

Chamber covers are installed in a variety of locations, including roads, sidewalks, parking lots, and public areas, where they provide access to sewer systems, storm drains, telecommunications networks, electrical systems, and other underground infrastructure. They are essential for maintenance, inspection, and repair work, allowing authorized personnel to enter and perform necessary tasks.

Among the various types of manhole covers available, SFRC (Steel Fiber Reinforced Concrete) manhole covers have gained significant popularity due to their superior strength, durability, and safety features.

What is SFRC cover?

SFRC stands for Steel Fiber Reinforced Concrete. SFRC manhole covers are designed using a combination of concrete and steel fibers, resulting in a high-strength composite material. The addition of steel fibers enhances the load-bearing capacity, tensile strength, impact resistance, and overall durability of the covers.  SFRC manhole covers are known for their ability to withstand heavy loads, vehicular traffic, and harsh environmental conditions.

Manhole Cover Sizes

SFRC manhole covers are available in a range of sizes to suit different applications. Common sizes include:

Square Manhole Covers: 300MM x 300MM, 450MM x 450MM, 600MM x 600MM and 750MM x 750MM.

Round Manhole Covers: 560MM Dia, 600MM Dia, 450MM Dia.

Rectangular Manhole Cover: 450MM x 500MM, 450MM x 600MM, 600MM x 900MM, 800MM x 900MM

However, custom sizes can also be manufactured based on specific project requirements.

SFRC Manhole Covers Load Capacity

As per IS 12592: 2002 standard, Rcc manhole covers are classified on the basis of load capacities into four types:

LD-2.5– Light Duty manhole covers are suitable for load capacities up to 2.5 tonnes. Most commonly used in areas where there is no vehicular loads like parks, footpaths etc.

MD- 10- Medium Duty chamber covers are suitable for load capacities up to 10 Tonnes. Most commonly used in areas with light vehicular loads like Ramps, Offices and home parking, Streets etc.

HD- 20- Heavy Duty man hole covers are suitable for load capacities up to 20 Tonnes. Most commonly used in roads and parkings with medium traffics.

EHD- 35- Extra Heavy Duty chamber covers are suitable for load capacities up to 35 Tonnes. These manhole covers are used where there is heavy traffic movement like highways and main roads.

Manhole Cover and frame prices

The price of Concrete manhole covers can vary depending on factors such as size, load-bearing capacity, and design specifications. Generally, prices range from INR 300 to INR 4000 per cover set consisting of one cover and one frame.

Advantages Of SFRC Manhole Covers

SFRC manhole covers offer several advantages over traditional alternatives:

  1. High strength and load-bearing capacity ensure long-term durability and resistance to heavy traffic loads.
  2. Enhanced safety features, such as anti-skid surfaces and locking mechanisms, prevent accidents and unauthorized access.
  3. Corrosion-resistant properties of steel fibers increase the lifespan of the covers, reducing maintenance and replacement costs.
  4. Non-conductive nature of SFRC eliminates the risk of electric shock, making them suitable for electrical utility networks.
  5. Aesthetic options like embossed logos, designs, and color customization can help integrate the covers seamlessly into the surrounding environment.
  6. Anti Theft due to heavy weight and zero resale value of concrete covers

Conclusion

SFRC gratings provide a reliable and durable solution for accessing underground utility networks. Their high-strength properties, enhanced safety features, and resistance to harsh environmental conditions make them an ideal choice for various applications. Whether in municipal areas, commercial sites, or residential complexes, SFRC manhole covers ensure long-lasting performance, improved safety, and efficient maintenance of underground infrastructure. When considering manhole covers for your project, consult with reputable manufacturers to select the right size, load-bearing capacity, and design specifications that meet your specific requirements.

FAQ

  1. What is SFRC manhole cover?

SFRC Manhole cover or Steel Fiber Reinforced Concrete Manhole Cover are removable lids used to secure the manhole openings and provide access to underground utility networks and manhole chambers.

  1. How much does a SFRC cover weigh?

Weight of SFRC covers depends on its size, thickness and load bearing capacity.

  1. What is the full form of SFRC cement?

SFRC refers to Steel Fiber Reinforced Concrete. SFRC is a type of concrete in which small steel fibers are added along with cement, aggregates, and water. These steel fibers improves the tensile strength, crack resistance, and durability of concrete.

  1. What is the compressive strength of SFRC?

The compressive strength of SFRC (Steel Fiber Reinforced Concrete) typically ranges from 30 to 60 MPa (megapascals), depending on the mix design, type, and volume of steel fibers used.

  1. What is the full form of SFRC manhole?

Full form of SFRC manhole is Steel Fiber Reinforced Concrete Manhole.

  1. Why fiber reinforced concrete is used?

Fiber reinforced concrete is used to increase the tensile strength, crack resistance and durability of a concrete product.

  1. What is the thickness of SFRC manhole cover?

Thickness of SFRC Manhole cover depends upon the size, loadbearing capacity and its applications. It typically ranges from 40 mm to 100 mm and can be even greater, based on specific size and performance requirements.

  1. What is a concrete manhole?

Concrete Manhole is a vertical access system used to provide entry to underground utilities such as sewer systems, storm drains and electrical or telecommunication networks.

  1. What is the purpose of a manhole cover?

The purpose of manhole cover is to secure the opening of manhole chambers and prevent unwanted dirt, dust, water, debris, and other foreign articles to enter the chamber. These covers are removable allowing the access of manholes for inspection and maintenance.

  1. What kind of concrete do you use for manhole covers?
